Whether you are a pro jewelry maker or new to making jewelry
there are some basic supplies you should have on hand. Most of
you will know that your basic supplies should include clasps,
earring hardware, and clips, but what are some of the more uncommon
supplies that are available.
1. Chain
You can order chain by the role or in lengths so that you can
cut the amount you need. All size links are available as well
as all metal types. Prices vary depending on size and metal
type. It doesn't hurt to have at least a bit of chain in stock
because it gives you great flexibility for your designs.
2. Brooch Clasps
You should stock at least a few brooch clasps in both gold
and silver. They come in a variety of sizes but the best way
to keep your costs down is to choose a medium size that should
work with most brooches you design. Brooches are still very
popular and designer brooches are not that easy to find.
3. Button Shanks & Covers
Perhaps you don't classify buttons as jewelry. While you should.
Fancy jeweled buttons sell well. Stock at least a few button
shanks and covers. Whether you choose gold or silver tone metals
is up to you. They are available in many sizes. At first it
might be best to choose a mid size to work with.
4. Choker Cord
Choker cord does just what it says - it's used to make chokers.
It is available in several materials from leather to suede to
man made materials. It is available in several thicknesses and
in a host of colors with black being the most popular. This
chord works great for pendant and bead style chokers.
5. Shoe Clips
If you are looking to try something different you might want
to order some shoe clips. Back at the turn of the century shoe
clips were very popular. Funny thing is in the past few years
they've regained a following so there may be a real niche market
here. A good designer can make some fabulous clips! Shoe clips
are available in gold and silver tone metals and a few different
sizes.
6. Scarf Clips
Although scarfs may not be as popular as a few years ago, many
women still wear them and scarf clips are difficult to find.
If you are looking for a niche market for your jewelry you might
want to stock some scarf clips and make some designer clips
to test the market.
7. Bolo Findings
Why not be brave and venture into the men's market. Bolo's are
still very popular. You could order a few findings and see where
your creativity takes you. Who knows there may be a niche market
waiting for you.
