Guide To Gemstone Jewelry

Gemstone jewelry, have you ever wondered why we are drawn to it? Why when you walk into the jewelry store you find yourself instantly hovering over a particular gem? Perhaps it's magic or mystical? Perhaps our ancestors' were more in tune with mother earth than our civilization today, because they certainly knew!!

The mystery and magic of gemstone's can be found in the history of most cultures back to ancient times. Long before gems were used for gemstone jewelry they were used as healing stones, talismans, and within the tribal circles. Since ancient times gems it has been believed they hold magical powers and that they could enhance certain attributes in the wearer.

The love affair with gemstones dates back to the very beginning of civilization. For our ancestors, the blue sapphire produced visions of the heavens; the red ruby protected you and kept your life safe. Emeralds were good for the eyes, yellow stones cured jaundice and red stones would stop the flow of blood.

In some cultures it was believed that a ruby worn by a man indicated command, nobility, yet worn by a woman, it indicated obstinacy. A blue sapphire worn by a man indicated wisdom, but worn by a woman, it indicated jealousy. The emerald worn by a man signified transitory hope, yet worn by a woman it signified unfounded ambition.

In Roman times, rings with gems were a sign of your power. The more powerful you were the more fingers you wore rings on. So the most powerful men and women would have a gemstone ring on each finger.

Gems were used extensively as talismans and amulets because the magical powers they held. They were used to predict the future, to heal the body and the mind, in tribal ceremonies, by the medicine man, and for religious practices.

Natural gems are found in mother nature's earth, where as synthetic gems are created in labs. Synthetic gems have almost identical properties as the natural gems but by law they must tell you that the gem is synthetic. This is good for a couple of reasons. First you won't pay too much for a synthetic stone, and second many people still use natural gems for healing, in talismans, to protect, and to aid those with the third eye.

Imitation stones look like natural stones in appearance only, and may be glass, plastic, or less costly stones. These stones must be clearly identified. If you are looking for a nice piece of gemstone jewelry but for little money, be sure to check out imitation gems as there are some very good quality ones on the market.

There are a few gemstones that remain popular year after year. These include sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and amethyst. Of course there are many other stones that are very popular.

The right gem with the right cut can be electrifying! There are many cuts used on gems such as the round brilliant, oval, emerald cut, cushion cut, square cut, cabochon, pear cut, opposed bar, radiant, and marquis cut. There are other cuts but these are the most common.

In this day and age, gemstones are generally worn for their natural beauty or as a fashion statement, but there are many that still buy gems for their mythical and mystical symbolism, and there are still those that buy gems for their magical powers. Laugh if you will, but each person's reason for choosing a particular gem is a personal choice.

The choices you have for gemstone jewelry are endless, the choices you have in choosing a gem are infinite. With so many choices the idea of choosing the right gemstone jewelry might be a little daunting. Don't worry, follow your heart and choose the one you are drawn to.
